Emery snub throws limelight back on Bilic for West Ham job

| 05.06.2015

Sevilla manager Unai Emery has drifted massively in the betting to become West Ham’s new manager having reportedly snubbed the Irons after talks, paving the way for Slaven Bilic to fill the vacancy.

Although Emery had raced into an odds-on position barely 48-hours earlier, the Spaniard’s potential appointment did have significant question marks associated with it.

Now an 8/1 chance for an increasingly unlikely Boleyn Ground switch, Emery’s opportunity to test himself in the Champions League with Sevilla next season has always looked a difficult one to dismiss.

Having overseen the devilish task of retaining the Europa League it seems sensible that the former Valencia coach now enjoys the fruits of his labour in the continent’s premier club competition.

With Emery’s name as good as out of the frame and Marseille manager Marcelo Bielsa (7/1) also reported to have extended his stay at the Ligue 1 outfit within the last 24 hours, the job looks as good as Bilic’s.

The former player, who had previously been a favourite for the post anyhow, now looks virtually unassailable in the race for Sam Allardyce’s vacated job, available at 1/3.

Indeed, with many other candidates in the betting such as David Moyes (16/1) refuting claims he will desert Real Sociedad for any other post, and Steve McClaren (25/1) closing in on the top job at Newcastle, there seems no real obstacles to Bilic’s appointment.

Although he only turned out for West Ham for a relatively short period in his playing career, the Croatian’s application while donning the claret and blue endeared him to many fans.

The outgoing Besiktas manager is a round peg in a round hole it would seem.
