Man City to test Arsenal’s resolve with chunky bid for midfielder

Manchester City’s faltering quest to alleviate Liverpool of Raheem Sterling could have the domino effect of the deposed Premier League champions turning their attentions to other home-grown talent.

The Daily Mirror proffer that the subject of those intentions is most likely to be Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere.

This would not be the first time Wilshere’s name has been mentioned in the same breath as City in recent years, but this time the club will solidify their interest with a bid according to the paper.

The first approach could involve testing the waters with a £30m offer.

Although this is a sizeable amount, Arsenal, much like Liverpool with Sterling, are likely to remain steadfast over one of their brightest young talents.

While Wilshere is three years Sterling’s senior at 23, a string of injuries early in his career have prevented the Gunners from consistently seeing the best of the left-footed maestro thus far.

Wilshere’s recent starring role for England, where he netted two carbon-copy screamers, will only reiterate to Arsenal the ability the versatile midfielder has to be tapped.

Although there is something of an over subscription in Arsene Wenger’s midfield, the Frenchman has never entertained losing the boyhood Gooner to a rival in the past, even in spite of his injury problems.

It’s likely to take a sum skywards of the mooted amount to even begin a dialogue between the potential Premier League title rivals for next season.

If anything, the Sterling transfer seems far more likely to transpire this summer, as the Liverpool man is known to desire the move whereas Wilshere isn’t in the same position.

Arsenal are currently third favourites at 5/1, behind City at 5/2 to lift the Premier League title in 2015/16.
