Man Utd set sights on audacious move for Real Madrid star

The names linked with a move to Manchester United this summer have been glittering and household, but the latest player linked with a switch to Old Trafford has come straight out of left field.

It is no secret that Louis van Gaal has wanted to add a domineering centre-back to his Red Devils squad since he took over from David Moyes last season and it looks as though the Dutchman has decided to shoot for the sky if latest reports are to be believed.

Following on from links with Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels, the Iron Tulip has decided to take his pursuit of a new defender up a notch by registering an interest in Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos.

According to the Daily Star on Sunday, admittedly not the first stop for reputable transfer stories, the former Barcelona coach will raid his one-time rivals for the Spanish international to take advantage of Los Blancos’ reluctance to meet Ramos’ wage demands on a new deal.

The former Sevilla man, who has two years left on his current contract, wants an extension worth £10m-a-year, but the La Liga giants are so far standing firm that those wishes will not be met.

Should a stand-off continue, Van Gaal hopes that a bid of around £20m for the 29-year-old will help the Bernabeu outfit solve their problem.

Ramos has developed into one of the world’s best centre-backs since joining Madrid from his boyhood club in 2005, winning three league titles and the Champions League in that time.

With the mentality of a champion and 127 Spanish caps to his name, his is the kind of experience Van Gaal craves at the heart of his defence with the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones set to lead the team in that department next season, where the Red Devils are fourth favourites to win the Premier League at 5/1.
