Meet the European U21 finalist Liverpool are in the hunt for

Published:

There is no derailing Liverpool’s recruitment drive this summer, as the club who have already confirmed deals for five players look to add three more to their growing squad.

Thankfully, though, not all of the latest trio linked to an Anfield switch would expect to be picked in the first team right away, otherwise Brendan Rodgers would have plenty of disgruntled players on his hands.

Nathaniel Clyne, expected to confirm his switch from Southampton to the 2/1 top-four hopefuls imminently, would rightly assume he’d be the first-choice right-back once he arrives. But on the opposite flank, Ludwig Augustinsson could well be the starting left-back.

That’s if reports that the Reds have earmarked the Swedish youth as yet another summer signing are to be believed.

Alberto Moreno wasn’t able to make that spot in the side his own during an injury plagued season for Jose Enrique, leaving his Northern Irish boss to hunt for an alternative.

According to reports, Augustinsson is that option. The 21-year-old Copenhagen player is set to feature in his country’s U21 European Championship final, where Ladbrokes make Sweden the 4/1 outsiders for victory.

The Stockholm native only moved to the Danish giants this past January, after making 29 appearances for IFK Goteborg, but is believed to be available for as little as £2m.

He hasn’t been restricted to U21 performances for Sweden either, having made two outings for the senior team during friendly encounters with Ivory Coast and Finland in January.

Should he move to England, Augustinsson may have some grovelling to do. During his nation’s improbable run to the European Championship final, the left-back branded Gareth Southgate’s England squad “overrated”, which, in fairness, turned out to be a correct assessment.
