Federer’s odds to end Murray’s SW19 tilt must not be passed up

| 09.07.2015

There could well be a bittersweet ending for those British tennis fans prepared to back Roger Federer to make the 2015 Wimbledon final over home favourite Andy Murray.

Ladbrokes make the seven-time Wimbledon champion the 11/10 underdog to beat one-time SW19 champ Murray, who is the 8/11 favourite.

With Murray-mania in full effect it’s very easy to get carried away with the hysteria and brush over some pretty important facts that render Federer’s price a belter.

The Swiss maestro may be 33, but he is ranked one place higher in the world than his 28-year-old opponent (2) and is still 15 Grand Slam titles better off as well.

Furthermore, if people believe him to be over the hill, the only match the greatest player ever to play on grass has lost on his favourite surface in 20 was last year’s Wimbledon final.

To jog memories, that was a five-set epic against world number one Novak Djokovic and barring an anomaly the year before, it was the great man’s second SW19 final appearance in the last three years to go with his 2012 title.

Taking in the Halle Open title, scooped before heading to London, Federer has prevailed in 25 of 26 sets he has contested on grass this season, whereas Murray has dropped sets in two of his last three matches.

If you are still unconvinced that Federer is among the most baffling underdogs in the sporting calendar to date, then consider this.

The pair are level at 12-12 in head-to-head career meetings, but lately there has only been one winner.

Starting with last season’s Australian Open quarter final, which Federer won 3-1, the Swiss player has claimed the honours twice more – thrashing Murray 6-0, 6-1 in the ATP Tour Finals in December last time they met.

That’s now seven of the last eight sets contested between the duo that Federer has won.

The world number two should be backed to achieve victory by a 3-1 scoreline at 4/1.
