Dick Advocaat new favourite for the boot after Sunderland shocker

Nothing is ever won or lost in August, but for Dick Advocaat his time at Sunderland could have been made drastically shorter after the opening weekend.
Prior to the big kick-off the Black Cats boss was 7/1 to be the next manager to receive his P45 after guiding the club to Premier League safety at the death.
Fast-forward two months and after an abject defensive display, the Dutchman has halved in price to 7/2 to be the first Premier League boss to leave his job the season.
Their 4-2 defeat at the hands of Leicester City sees the club back where they don’t want to be, in the bottom three.
At the end of the season just gone it looked as though Advocaat would be bringing an end to his short spell in the north east.
But the former Rangers gaffer seemed to have a change of heart, and put pen-to-paper in a one-year contract.
Such is the short length of his deal that any such pay-out should the club’s hierarchy feel that they need to pull the trigger, any pay-off would be minimal.
The Little General, as he is known, spoke of how “the result scares” him a little bit, and hinted that he would be looking to spend some money before the transfer window shut.
“You can’t only buy players for £1 million, £2 million, £3 million. We have a president (owner Ellis Short) who is doing everything to help us, to help the team,” he told the Chronicle.
He has suggested that another striker is on his wish-list, and after selling Connor Wickham to Crystal Palace for £9m he could have plenty of money to spend.
Judging by Saturday’s performance he may well need to add one or two members of playing staff to ensure the Mackems are not drawn into a relegation battle once again, in turn putting even more pressure on his own position in the Sunderland dug-out.
