Villa boss hoping Spurs connection can land him England flyer

The rumours concerning Aston Villa and a potential swoop for Tottenham winger Andros Townsend have surfaced once more and it’s a move which may well have legs.

Almost as soon as Tim Sherwood had been installed at Villa Park for his second gig in management, the obvious ties to Spurs ensured links to various former players began in earnest.

However, the trails to Mousa Dembele, Aaron Lennon and Emmanuel Adebayor have all run chillingly cold since the end of last season.

Adebayor had seemed closest to a switch recently, only to be put off by the notion of living in the midlands, despite his career stalling badly in north London.

The name missing from that shortlist is Townsend’s, though the latest links are by no means the first.

Gossip-pedalling big guns the Daily Mirror suggest Sherwood is a big fan of the winger and now Townsend has recovered from a shoulder injury sustained in pre-season, the Villa manager is sizing up a bid.

According to the same paper, though, Spurs have attached a non-negotiable fee of £15m on a player who has never been considered an automatic first-choice at White Hart Lane.

Therefore Sherwood must decide whether he values his former charge at this hefty price, undoubtedly swelled by Townsend’s impact at international level, where the speedster has scored three times in just nine England caps.

With Villa sources also claiming Charles N’Zogbia is heading out of the club, there is likely to be a vacancy for a left-footed forward who prefers to cut in from the right.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino could hold sway on this transfer, as the Argentine assesses his attacking options following an opening-day defeat to Manchester United where chances went begging.
