Cristiano Ronaldo en route to Champions League top scorer gong

| 16.09.2015

Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday night are his first goals en route to a fifth top-goalscorer accolade in the Champions League.

That was the view from Ladbrokes News voters in today’s poll, as 56 per cent picked CR7 to come out on top once again.

In fact, in total 96 per cent of you said the Real Madrid man and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi were the only two in with a chance of topping the pile.

The Portuguese attacker’s treble in his side’s first foray in Europe this term was the third time he has bagged a hat-trick in the competition and is unlikely to be the last.

Having got off the mark in the best possible way, he moved from 3/1 to 7/4 in the betting to take the gong.

champsleaguepollChasing him home with 40 per cent of the vote was that man Messi.

The diminutive Argentine has been top scorer in the competition five times, most recently in 2014-15 when sharing it with Ronaldo and Neymar, each of them netting 10 goals.

With his Barcelona team in a group with Bayer Leverkusen, a side he put five past on his own three years ago, and BATE Borisov, who conceded 24 goals in their six group games last term, he can be expected to keep tabs on the leader.

One of the deadly duo has netted more than everyone else in each of the last eight years of the competition, so it is little surprise that just four per cent of you feel that anyone can stop the pair.

As it stands CR7 is on course to continue that pattern, and according to our readers, he’ll make a nine year shut-out for all challengers.
