Kamara: Saido Berahino should take a leaf out of John Stones’ book

| 03.09.2015

Saido Berahino’s deadline day outburst will certainly have plenty of consequences but it is too soon to write-off his West Brom career just yet.

He’s obviously been badly advised, and we all do silly things from time to time and he will probably regret what he’s done, and he’s certainly got a lot of making up to do at the Hawthorns.

From his point of view he’s probably thinking that because West Brom got him for nothing, in his mind, they have been offered a fair price for him and should let him go.

The one thing about football is if he scores next week it will go some way to adorning himself back to the fans. If he scores the following week, then they might even forgive him.

I don’t think it’s right to assume that he will be off in January or even in the summer.

If he continues to sulk or doesn’t produce the goods when he is on the pitch, clubs like Tottenham may decide he’s not worth the risk.

He may sit down with the manager and the chairman and accept that if he does the business on the pitch between now and the end of the season that he will get his move in the summer, but that is a long way away.

The club may feel they might have gone about things different in their dealings with the bids they have received, but they are right not to cut their nose off to spite their face. They have got to protect their best interests in these situations.

I spent Sunday afternoon in the company of Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and he explained how important it was to him to be able to build a team of players that they have brought through, without having to sell to the big guns.

John Stones has gone about expressing his desire to leave in the right way.

Yes, he has handed in a written transfer request, but when you are picked to play you still have to take to that field and give 100 per cent.

He may well have said he wants to leave to go to Chelsea, but he’s also shown that as long as he is pulling on the Everton jersey, he will give his all for the club and to be fair to John Stones all the right signs are there.

It will be interesting to watch how the Berahino situation develops, but with Tony Pulis an excellent man-manager, if anyone can help him get through it, it will be him.
