Ladbrokes League 1: Five Star Pars go goal crazy

Published:

The two powerhouses in the Ladbrokes League 1 division moved into pole position following away wins, while Brechin finally got off the mark in style.

Here is your weekend review…

Stenhousemuir were on the end of a hurricane force in Dunfermline as they stormed past the hapless Warriors 5-0 in front of their own supporters.

The prolific Moroccan Fayssal El-Bakhtaoui amazingly notched his 13th and 14th goals of the season as his scoring exploits so no sign of slowing down.

Allan Johnston’s men have now found the net an astonishing 26 times in their seven league games, as opposition defences have been left reeling all over the country.

The Fifers still trail top dogs Ayr United by a point however, after the Honest Men recorded a hard fought 2-1 win away at Airdrie.

The home side took the lead through an early Liam Watt strike, but Craig Moore got the equaliser and a fine long range effort from Brian Gilmour sent the team back to Ayrshire with the points and the league leaders title.

Previous incumbents of top spot, Forfar, went down to a surprise 2-1 defeat at the hands of the struggling Cowdenbeath. Dick Campbell was deservedly named as Ladbrokes League 1 manager of the month for August, but the curse of the award winner struck again.

The Blue Brazil picked up their first victory in four matches, thanks to lovely winning strike from Greig Spence.

There was a big shock at Balmoor, as Brechin picked up their first points of the season with a 3-2 win at Peterhead.

Darren Dods’ side had slumped to a woeful six straight defeats to start the league campaign, but a Robert Thomson double, sandwiched between a Dene Shields strike gave them an unexpected win in the Highlands.

Finally, Albion Rovers picked up their maiden away win at Stranraer, as they continue their fine start to the season following their promotion last year.

This was an edgy and evenly contested encounter, with neither side looking like breaking the deadlock at Stair Park. With time running out it was the substitute Scott McBride who won the day, as the home side dropped into the bottom two.
