More losses put Rodgers and Mourinho under real pressure

Losing to your biggest rivals is never going to endear you to the club’s supporters, or the hierarchy for that matter. Brendan Rodgers will be feeling a little twitchy this morning after a 3-1 loss away at Manchester United. That followed a 3-0 humbling at home to West Ham, and after a solid start the Reds’ defensive woes have reared their head and the vultures appear to be circling Anfield.
The Northern Irishman has spent over £300m in his time on Merseyside and there were calls for his head this summer. He started the season as favourite for the chop and now finds himself second only to the seemingly doomed Dick Advocaat in the sack race. That loss to Louis van Gaal’s men has seen him move from 5/1 into 5/2 to be the next boss to leave.
It’s not just the fact that Liverpool have lost successive matches, it is the manner in which they have done so. There was little fight on display on their own patch two weeks ago against the Hammers and it was the same again at Old Trafford.
The manager’s tactics have also been questioned, as he strangely persists with using the likes of Roberto Firmino and Danny Ings as wingers.
It was another woeful week for Jose Mourinho too, as his Chelsea side went down 3-1 at Everton. The Portuguese felt the need to constantly reaffirm that he believes he is the man for the job at Stamford Bridge, which is a sign that this unexplainable fall in performance is really getting to him.
There is a feeling that he could be edging towards resignation, such are his defensive and scattergun outbursts. Mourinho has never stayed at a club beyond three seasons and this dire start to his third with the Blues has seen him shorten into 9/2 to be the next boss to be out of a job.
However, unsurprisingly, it’s Black Cats’ boss Advocaat who still leads the betting. He’s now 12/5 to be the next manager out of the door after yet another loss at the weekend.
