Many an eyebrow was quizzically raised when Manchester United shelled out £36m for Anthony Martial from Monaco in the summer, but the Frenchman’s blistering start to life at Old Trafford has quickly scorned the doubters.
Martial bagged his fifth goal in just nine appearances for the Red Devils in Wednesday night’s Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow, and in doing so reached a quintet of United goals 30 games quicker than former United hero Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese star was signed by United at 18 and went on to score 118 times in 292 appearances, winning pretty much everything there is to be won during his time in England.
A move to Real Madrid has only seen Ronaldo continue his rise to global stardom, and it’s an oft-made point that only Lionel Messi can hold a candle to the forward as a current footballing legend.
With Martial’s rapid start to life in Manchester, we wanted to know if you thought he can go on to eclipse Ronaldo, and though it’s been a close call, Ladbrokes News voters have made their decision.
Our poll reveals that 57 per cent of you think the Frenchman can go on to eclipse what Ronaldo has achieved, a huge statement of belief in the 19-year-old’s potential.
A sizeable number, 43 per cent to be exact, are sitting on the other side of the fence and don’t fancy the former Monaco man to reach the heights of Madrid’s number seven.
It’s too early to tell, but Martial is sure to create plenty more headlines over the coming years.
