Strictly week 2: Jay McGuiness steals the show

| 05.10.2015

Not many viewers were too disappointed to see athletics star Iwan Thomas and Ola Jordan become the first contestants to leave this year’s edition of Strictly Come Dancing.

Judge Bruno Tonioli summed up their final efforts perfectly when he said: “You went for the Neanderthal approach cha-cha and you exploded it to extinction, that was murder… but I appreciate the effort.”

But that wasn’t the main talking point.

Jay McGuiness stole the show for us and that’s why he’s headlining our round-up.

It’s fast becoming all about Jay

Jay is a rising star on this year's Strictly

The Wanted singer Jay sported a fresh trim and some very neat moves when performing the Waltz with dance partner Allona Vilani.

Their performance to ‘See the Day’ secured them the highest score of the series so far and it’s fair to say that punters are starting to take a very serious interest in the pair.

Jay was as big as 10/1 to win the show less than two weeks ago. But he now finds himself as the 7/2 second favourite behind Peter Andre.

Helen is leading the way for the girls but don’t jump in too early

Call the Midwife star Helen George continues to impress and she’s now a fairly short 9/4 to best her other female counterparts.

Alongside Aljaž Skorjanec she performed the ‘best Cha Cha of the evening’ according to judge Craig Revel-Horwood with their rendition handing them a score of 29.

Katie Derham wasn’t that far behind with 28 points awarded for her Tango.

Helen’s done well but it’s still too early to split the Top Female market.

Daniel O’Donnell is a dark horse

Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell is fast emerging as the housewives’ choice and we think he’s a bit of a dark horse.

The Emerald Isle’s answer to Cliff Richard oozes deadpan charm and as long as he remains technically proficient he should last until the clocks go back, possibly even longer.

He’s still a big 33/1 outsider to win the Glitterball trophy and the 20/1 on offer for him to be this year’s Top Male is generous.

But don’t go lumping on him in the eviction markets just yet.
