The Weekly Acca: There’s no way past Sheffield Wednesday

Our ‘follow the heavy favourites’ logic didn’t quite work out last week thanks to draws for both Ipswich and Oxford but we’re not going to be put off by that near miss.

Granted, we’re not exactly ripping up the form book with our latest selections but at 18/1 there’s still plenty of juice in following this five-fold.

Man City to beat Newcastle

Man City had won nine home games in a row in the Premier League before their recent defeat to West Ham with one of those victories a 5-0 battering of the visiting Magpies.

Newcastle haven’t won away in the league since January and even then that was against relegated Hull.

In fact, they’ve now lost eight of their last 10 away from St. James’ Park since then and look little more than cannon fodder at the Etihad.

Sheffield Wednesday to beat Preston

Wednesday are on a roll having won their last three in all competitions and they can put Preston to the sword this weekend.

The Lilywhites have found it tough going back in the second tier, winning just the one game so far.

Back-to-back defeats on their Championship travels doesn’t signal an upturn in fortunes and they’re likely to find their in-form hosts too hot to handle

Rochdale to beat Bradford

Keith Hill continues to work wonders at Spotland and Bradford can become his side’s latest victims.

The Bantams have only picked up two points from the last 12 on offer and their recent 2-0 loss to Colchester will have the fans starting to ask questions.

By contrast, high-flying Dale have won four of their last five on their own patch and look upwardly mobile in League One.

Plymouth to beat Crawley

The hosts are in fine form at present with the second-placed Pilgrims now unbeaten in their last four games in League Two.

Crawley saw off fellow strugglers Newport 3-0 in midweek but they’re likely to get short shrift in Devon.

Argyle have lost just two of their previous 12 competitive league matches at Home Park and the visitors are unlikely to trouble that record.

Roma to beat Palermo

We’re crossing over to Italy for this weekend’s continental pick and it’s Roma who get the nod away at Palermo.

The Sicilians have now lost three-in-a-row in Serie A having initially made a good start to the campaign.

Roma have a Champions League hangover to deal with following defeat to BATE Borisov but we fancy them to bounce back here.

Having suffered just three defeats in their previous 17 away games this trip should hold no fears for Rudi Garcia’s men.
