Voters send message to Sam Burgess – “go back to rugby league!”

If the result of today’s poll were a boxing match then you’d have to say it’s delivered a knockout blow to Sam Burgess’ hopes of making it in rugby union.

When asked the question “should Sam Burgess make a rugby league return?” an incredible 93 per cent of Ladbrokes News voters hit the ‘yes’ button.

The Bath and England centre has been made something of a scapegoat for the hosts’ inability to get out of Pool A at this year’s World Cup.

And that’s triggered rumours of a return to the code where he enjoyed so much success.

Super League side Leeds Rhinos are allegedly interested in securing the services of Burgess although the player himself has remained tight-lipped on the issue.

Having made the switch to Union back in January, the 26-year-old enjoyed a meteoric rise in the game, culminating in his call-up to Stuart Lancaster’s World Cup squad.

However, a series of disjointed performances have been met with a fair amount of criticism.

Lancaster has been quick to try and quell speculation surrounding Burgess’ future though but even his comments haven’t stopped the media from pursuing their own agenda.

And while it’s still highly likely that he’ll start the new domestic season at the Recreation Ground the message from the voting public is clear.

Quite simply, the former South Sydney Rabbitohs star would be better off returning to the warm bosom that League would provide.
