Man United could already be done with Memphis Depay

Published:

Manchester United’s camp are awash with transfer rumours right now, the most exciting for fans being the possible signing of Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic from PSG.

However, that’s not all van Gaal has his sights set on, and has indicated that he would like to sign a “speedy” winger in the January transfer window, given his current stock of wide men have lacked the pace United need to build on their attack.

Memphis Depay has been largely disappointing since his move to Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven, failing to secure a place in the first team, and instead making way for 22-year-old Jesse Lingard.

The youngster impressed during the sides’ 2-0 win over West Brom at the weekend where he bagged the opener.

So could Depay’s career at Old Trafford already be over? Who could van Gaal sign in the transfer window? We give readers the lowdown on the five biggest possibilities as United go on the hunt in their need for speed:

NEYMAR

It has been reported that the Reds have been in secret talks over the purchase of the Brazilian superstar, and should he make the move to Old Trafford he would become the undisputed main man, just 23 years of age and coming into prime form. The Brazilian’s popularity is rife, however, and he could be the perfect replacement for Zlatan as PSG express interest.

SADIO MANE

Mane was a shock transfer target for van Gaal during the summer months, with the club willing to pay around £20 million for the move which was subsequently rejected by Southampton. However, interest could still be strong, with the Senagalese winger scoring three and assisting in four goals for Southampton this season.

GARETH BALE

The Welshman isn’t exactly adored by Real Madrid fans despite his consistent scoring form, as footage emerged of him being abused in the car park following their Champions League exit to Juventus last season. Even Cristiano Ronaldo has shown visible annoyance after the Welsh winger chose to shoot rather than pass to the club’s superstar earlier this year. The allure of a return to the Premier League and van Gaal in hot pursuit could draw Bale away from the Bernabeu.

RIYAD MAHREZ

Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy have proved a dangerous duo at Leicester, the Algerian bagging seven league goals for the Foxes already this season. Despite his agent insisting he will not be leaving the King Power Stadium, interest from both van Gaal and Arsene Wenger could prove too enticing to pass up.

ANDRE GOMES

Valencia’s classy playmaker Andre Gomes has allegedly caught the eye of van Gaal, with scouts reportedly present at the Champions League game between Valencia and Gent. After a failed offer from both United and Manchester City this summer, van Gaal could make another play for the midfielder in January.
