Chelsea should turn to former Man City man next season

Chelsea have applied the temporary measure of bringing in Guus Hiddink to sort out the mess that led to Jose Mourinho being sacked, but they will need a more permanent solution to their problem by the start of next season.

One option being floated around in the papers is to bring in a man who won the Premier League with Manchester City, with Roberto Mancini rumoured to be in the running.

Mourinho replaced Mancini at Inter Milan in 2008, where the Italian manager is back once again, and having the reverse happen at Stamford Bridge eight years later would have some kind of poetic footballing symmetry.

Mancini’s Inter currently sit top of Serie A after 17 games, with Italian football set to go on a winter break.

The Nerazzurri are one point clear of second-place Fiorentina and the former Man City manager has turned them into a solid defensive unit to help achieve this success.

Mancini’s men have conceded less than any other team in the division, only letting the ball in 11 times, and this goal stinginess has seen them win six of their last eight matches.

All of the victories in that run came with a clean sheet and Samir Handanovic is truly showing why he is a fan favourite at the San Siro.

The 51-year-old manager’s impressive undertaking at the club he managed to a Serie A title three times during his last spell there is especially impressive when you consider what he took them from.

Last season, Inter finished eighth in the league after an embarrassing campaign and haven’t finished in a position to earn Champions League qualification since 2011.

Now, Mancini’s men are table-toppers and third favourite at 6/1 to win the Scudetto, with the ability to turn a troubled giant back into title contenders being just what Chelsea need.
