Swansea in race with Southampton to sign Sampdoria striker

| 08.01.2016

Having been handed the reins at the Liberty Stadium until the end of the season, Alan Curtis is on the move to try and bring in an added goal threat to his Swansea City side.

Only Aston Villa have netted fewer than the Swans 17 Premier League goals this term, and their struggles up front have been evident in recent weeks with just five goals in the Welsh side’s last 10 league fixtures.

Bafetimbi Gomis netted four times in the opening four games of the campaign, but one strike since has forced Curtis to look elsewhere.

Reports this week have linked Swansea with Sampdoria outcast Luis Muriel.

The 24-year-old was a regular starter for the Genoa side earlier this season under Walter Zenga, but since new coach Vincenzo Montella arrived in mid-November, Muriel has started just one of the four subsequent Serie A matches.

Eager for first-team football, the former Udinese man is looking for a quick exit, and Southampton are also in the frame.

Muriel is valued by transfermarkt.co.uk at £7m, but such is the forward’s keenness for a switch, Swansea may not have to go over that figure.

The Swans sit 17th in the Premier League, just two points above the drop zone, and their precarious nature is reflected in the 3/1 odds from Ladbrokes for them to be relegated this season.

Noted as a powerful, pacey forward with tidy link-up play, the Italian could be just the answer to Swansea’s goal-shy dilemma, and not a moment too soon.
