Distracted Liverpool lose top target to German giants

Jurgen Klopp poured ice-cold water over any flames of hope still flickering amongst Liverpool fans that an 11th-hour bid for Alex Teixeira might still be in the offing.

“I don’t think something will happen in terms of incomings,” said the German, ruling out the possibility for of a move for the Brazilian forward whom current club Shakhtar value at £53m.

Klopp’s comments offer no hints as to whether he will attempt to rekindle the deal as part of his pre-season transfer plans, but while he has been focusing on Teixeira, developments in his native land may force him back to the drawing board.

They don’t concern the Shakhtar superstar, but a potential defensive addition the former Borussia Dortmund boss wanted to bring to the Premier League.

Joel Matip is the player in question, a Cameroon international whose Schalke contract has entered its final months.

As a free agent, the 24-year-old wouldn’t have been short of suitors across the continent, with the Liverpool chief thought to be one of his keenest admirers.

However, their stalling has prompted Schalke to offer Matip an extension to his deal, dangling the carrot of doubled wages according to reports, which could be enough to convince him to remain in Gelsenkirchen.
