Five of the most memorable Super Bowl moments of all time

Published:

As the most-watched event on Earth it’s no surprise that when it comes to memorable Super Bowl moments, the list of contenders is pretty extensive.

America’s game reaches its half-century this weekend as the Denver Broncos look to deny the seemingly unstoppable Carolina Panthers, but as the Super Bowl has shown us time and time again, pretty much anything can happen.

It wasn’t easy to trim this down to just a top five, but we’ve had a bash at Ladbrokes News.

Read on and if you think we’ve missed out some golden moments, let us know in the comments below!

Deflategate – 2015

Last year’s Deflategate may have not been directly a Super Bowl moment, but it certainly overshadowed it.

Ahead of the tie between New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, Tom Brady endured a stormwave of a scandal over allegations he and his side had tampered with ball pressure in the AFC Championship game.

Did they or didn’t they? Nobody seems quite sure but it certainly took the shine of the Pats’ 28-24 success.

No lights, no party – 2013

Perhaps less controversial than other entries in this list, but no less memorable.

The 2013 edition also featured a rather risqué half-time performance from Beyonce, but that’s for another time.

Baltimore Ravens met the San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans and raced into an 28-6 lead early in the third before a power failure plunged the Mercedez-Benz Superdrome into darkness.

Play was delayed for over half an hour and it was the 49ers who took advantage, scoring 17 unanswered points, but it wasn’t enough as Ravens prevailed 34-31.

How much is in a yard? – 2000

Talk about drama.

The St. Louis Rams had defied expectation by reaching Super Bowl XXXIV in Georgia, where they faced the Tennessee Titans.

The two sides boasted just one previous showpiece appearance between them, and a topsy-turvy affair saw the Titans reduce St.Louis’ early 16-0 lead.

The Rams went over with just minutes to go to make it 23-16, but the Titans responded again, reaching the 10-yard line with six seconds on the clock.

Giants upset the Patriots – 2007

Regarded as one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history, pretty much nobody had the New York Giants beating the New England Patriots.

Tom Brady and the Pats hat steamrolled their way to Super Bowl XLII, and were heading for a perfect season against a Giants side that posted a 10-6 regular season score and needed to win each of their last six games just to make the post-season!

New England were -12 on the handicap ahead of the clash in Arizona, but Eli Manning and the Giants had a game-plan and stuck to it.

Pulling off one of the most unlikely pass-plays in history, Manning turned the game on its head inside the last dying moments to pull off one of sport’s biggest surprises.

Janet Jackson’s Boobgate – 2004

We’re not sure what the intention was in preparation for Janet Jackson’s duet with Justin Timberlake, but with millions of children watching the 2004 half-time show, we don’t think they understood the target audience.

Dressed like someone out of the Matrix, maybe we were to expect Timberlake to rip off a piece of Jackson’s clothing, revealing a breast covered by nothing but a star.

A nation, nee, a world, was shocked. Nobody even remembers what happened in the actual game that year. (Patriots beat Panthers 32-29).
