Ladbrokes League 2: Struggling Berwick meet East Stirling in six-pointer

| 05.02.2016

The adverse weather in recent weeks means we’ve enjoyed a full quota of Ladbrokes League 2 fixtures just once since Christmas, and while we are missing one game this Saturday, it’s not down to the elements.

Annan Athletic’s foray into the latter stages of the Scottish Cup means that their tie with Clyde will have to wait for another day, but we do still have four fixtures to give the once over.

Here’s where your money should be going in Scotland’s fourth tier.

Berwick Rangers v East Stirling

This game could be looked back on at the end of the season as the fixture that nudged one side closer to the drop. It’s easy to see where bottom club East Stirling’s problems lie, having conceded three or more goals in six of their last eight games.

Opponents Rangers were one of the sides to do just that when running out 4-0 victors last month, in what was only their second win in 10 matches.

The hosts have won their last seven encounters with the Shire and can be expected to do the same again. Don’t expect a walkover though, the Shire have only been behind at half-time once in their last five away games.

Best bet: HT/FT: Draw/Berwick @ 18/5

Queen’s Park v Elgin City

The goal drought continues for Queen’s Park with the Spiders netting just two goals in their last five games.

While their solidity at the back might be enough to nick points here and there against others in the division, Elgin are a far more potent threat.

City have averaged two goals a game in all competitions since the start of November and it is that profligacy that has seen them climb to the summit of League 2.

The hosts have only won two of their last six league fixtures at Hampden and will need to up their offensive game if they are to take anything out of this fixture, but at the prices Jim Weir’s men look value.

Best bet: Elgin @ 21/10

Arbroath v Stirling Albion

The Binos were enjoying an excellent run of form before Christmas, but since the festivities they have failed to get their head in front, falling short in five games.

They will need to address that at Gayfield Park against an Arbroath outfit that cannot stop scoring at the moment.

The Red Lichties’ 3-0 victory over East Stirling last week was the sixth game in a row in which Todd Lumsden’s men have scored two or more.

With the likes of Josh Skelly and Jamie Henry joining on loan from Premiership sides in recent weeks there is reason to believe there is more to come from the hosts in the future.

Best bet: Arbroath to score over 1.5 goals @ Evens

Montrose v East Fife

There seems to be a mini revival underway at Montrose with the Gable Endies winning two and drawing one of their last three league fixtures.

However, they face a much bigger test against an East Fife outfit that have won five of their last six games, and avoided defeat against this weekend’s opponents in the last nine league meetings.

Calling a winner looks tough, but with both sides netting in eight of the last nine games at Links Park and the Fifers scoring 18 goals in their last six games against the Paul Hegarty’s outfit, goals look on the agenda.

Best bet: Over 3.5 goals @ 27/20
