Newcastle’s relentless recruitment drive moves to Liverpool

In an attempt to clamber clear of the relegation places, Newcastle have taken a bucket of cash and thrown it at the January transfer window.

Some of the dough has stuck, with Jonjo Shelvey making an early impression after swapping Swansea’s own fight against the drop for the Toon’s, while other arrivals like Andros Townsend and deadline-day capture Seydou Doumbia are yet to feature.

Despite the four new signings this winter, Steve McClaren is clearly not content with his current squad and a short-term deal for a former Magpies favourite could add to the new faces.

Jose Enrique has made just three senior appearances for Liverpool this season, all of them coming in the FA Cup, and the defender has just six months left on his Anfield contract.

As a result, it has emerged that the Spaniard is considering signing a short-term deal with Newcastle as it looks increasingly unlikely that he’ll be offered new terms with the Reds.

Despite the raft of injuries currently experienced by Jurgen Klopp’s side, Enrique remains on the fringes of the first team and could feature far more prominently for McClaren.

A full back certainly seems high on the former England manager’s wishlist, as rumours that he also tried to lure Davide Santon back to club suggest.

The Magpies are an even-money chance with Ladbrokes to be relegated from the Premier League this season.
