Man Utd’s thirst for megastars sees Ronaldo re-enter frame

With the ink still drying on Jose Mourinho’s signature as Manchester United’s new manager, the rumour mill has understandably gone haywire.

Early indications are that Mourinho sees the arrival of at least four players during the summer months as integral to his plans for next season.

Given the desperation at United for the Portuguese to succeed where Sir Alex Ferguson’s first two replacements failed, Mourinho is likely to be backed to the hilt in this regard, not that Louis van Gaal was starved of funds.

This means Red Devils fans will be expecting big names to arrive at Old Trafford to help restore former glories and they don’t come much bigger than Cristiano Ronaldo.

Of course it’s not the first time that former Old Trafford favourite has been linked with a Red Devils reunion, but the ground has never really been particularly fertile.

Ronaldo does still have two years on his Real Madrid contract and is set to contest his second Champions League final in three years with the Spanish giants.

However, in his seven seasons at the Bernabeu, his only La Liga title was won under the guidance of his compatriot Mourinho back in 2011/12.

The three-time Ballon d’Or winner also reportedly keeps a residence in Cheshire, which many take as proof he hasn’t given up on the prospects of a return to his former stomping ground.

It remains to be seen if this summer is too soon for the Euros-bound Portugal skipper, especially with United bereft of Champions League football in 2016/17.

If the Special One does turn things around spectacularly at Old Trafford in his debut season though, then suddenly the appeal of a return is greatly enhanced.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival looks the more likely to be imminent if reports are to be believed.
