Newcastle odds-on to miss out on promotion next season

| 12.05.2016

The confirmation of their relegation may still be fresh in the mind the bad news continues for Newcastle United fans with their side tipped to miss out on promotion next season.

The Magpies’ fate was sealed when bitter rivals Sunderland blitzed Everton 3-0 last night and while the Toon Army will hope for an immediate return to the top flight our traders make the St James’ Park outfit odds-on to miss out on promotion at 1/2.

It’s a 6/4 shot that United can secure promotion by any means, while a Championship win isn’t totally out of the question at 9/2.

However, with the likes of Andros Townsend, Jonjo Shelvey and Ayoze Perez unlikely to fancy a stint in England’s second tier a prolonged stay in the Championship appears the most likely outcome.

It may come as scant consolation that a second successive relegation has seemingly been dismissed at 25/1, but any hopes of bouncing back in style by setting a new points record are likely to be dashed at odds of 16/1.

A Ladbrokes spokesman said: “The Toon Army will obviously be hoping to see their side bounce back at the first time of asking.

“However, with a number of key players set to leave and Rafa Benitez’s future also in doubt we think Newcastle fans should prepare for trips to Brentford, Birmingham and Burton for the foreseeable future.”

Newcastle will attempt to bow out of the top flight with dignity when they host Tottenham this weekend but go into the game 3/1 underdogs, with Spurs on at 4/5 and the draw available at 14/5.
