Soft ground makes Kodi Bear a Newbury TV card shoo-in

Don’t let three days of hoof-rattling conditions on the Knavesmire delude you, things are soft underfoot for Channel 4 Racing’s visit to Newbury.

Here are three selections expected to appreciate the going more than their rivals at the Berkshire course.

Remember, it’s Money Back if 2nd or 3rd to the SP Favourite on all Channel 4 races!*

Nap – Eagle Top – Newbury – 14:45

John Gosden and Frankie Dettori ripped up the Dante meeting and it would be churlish to oppose them in this five-runner affair.

Eagle Top has 7lbs in hand on the field in terms of official ratings.

Punters needn’t be put off backing him at around the even money mark by the fact that he’s never won on soft ground – the son of Pivotal went down by a nose to Postponed in last season’s King George on just such going.

NB – Kodi Bear – Newbury – 15:55

In a race where there is very little between Toormore, Limato, Belardo and the selection on official ratings Clive Cox’s charge gets the nod having scored on the expected going previously.

Belardo has yet to lose on the ground but has scored just once over the 1m trip in six tries, unlike Kodi Bear, who has won three of his five runs over 8f.

Lively Longshot – Spader – Newbury – 4:30

Ger Lyons colt left his juvenile form well behind on his first run of the season, bolting up over this trip on soft-to-heavy ground in a Navan handicap.

Up 10lbs for that run, there’s a suspicion he could remain well-treated and his trainer’s runners have largely been performing well in recent days.
