Sunderland’s transfer spree should start with Championship ace

It’s less than 24 hours since Sunderland secured their Premier League status but boss Sam Allardyce is already focusing on summer recruitment. And, among his key targets should be Huddersfield hitman Nahki Wells.

The 25-year-old has struck 18 times in all competitions for the Terriers this season and has been involved in over a third of their Championship goals during the campaign.

Unsurprisingly, there’s been reported interest from a number of clubs, but with the promise of Premier League football in front of 40,000+ people, Allardyce would have plenty to tempt the Bermudan forward with.

Big Sam told the Sunderland Echo this morning: “Only this year’s recruitment will put firefighting to one side.”

The former Bolton Wanderers boss – who has never suffered a Premier League relegation – added: “We have been in this position before, many times over the past three seasons, that is what has to happen this time around to stop (that cycle)”.

Snapping Wells up before the bids come flying in from elsewhere would be a great start, and with Transfermarkt valuing the former Bradford City man at £1.5m, he’s likely to be a risk-free acquisition.

The Wearside outfit head to Vicarage Road on Sunday, with players and fans alike able to enjoy the occasion with safety guaranteed. Sunderland are 5/2 to win with Watford 21/20.

However, with the Black Cats having drawn three of their last four away fixtures 1-1, the best value looks to be on a repeat of that scoreline at 11/2.
