3 marquee signings Everton could target this summer

After prising Ronald Koeman away from Southampton to take up their managerial vacancy, Everton’s attention has turned to finding some marquee names for their starting XI.

The Liverpool Echo reported that the Toffees’ new billionaire investor, Farhad Moshiri, wants to send a message of intent to the footballing world by snapping up a star name this summer.

If the capture of Koeman, who will reportedly pocket £6m-a-year in salary, is anything to go by, then the fact that Everton won’t be in Europe this season shouldn’t be too much of a deterrent.

The whopping wages now on offer at Goodison Park will be enough to attract a calibre of player that the club would have found unattainable in the past.

But the question is: what marquee name should the Toffees plump for? Well, here’s three options:

Juan Mata

The path from Old Trafford to Goodison is well travelled with Tim Howard, Phil Neville, Tom Cleverley and Darron Gibson among the recent signings Everton have made from Manchester United.

Should the Merseysiders manage to snare Mata from the Red Devils though, it’ll be the biggest of the lot.

The Spaniard’s future with the 13-time Premier League champions is unclear now that Jose Mourinho is in charge. The Portuguese famously sold the midfielder while ruling Chelsea, despite Mata winning consecutive Fans Player of the Year awards at Stamford Bridge.

Yaya Toure

Another Premier League star whose top-flight career is in jeopardy is the powerful Manchester City midfielder.

Pep Guardiola is arriving at City this summer and could well send Toure packing within the first few days on the job, having had little use for his lethargic ways at Barcelona in the past.

A raft of lucrative moves to the MLS or China are likely to come the African’s way, but if he wants to remain in England then Everton will be able to compete with those fees.

Kasper Schmeichel

Tim Howard is no longer top dog between the Everton sticks and, after the American returned home this summer, a new glove man is required.

Goalkeeping purchases don’t often excite fans, but if the Toffees were to land a recent Premier League champion then it may cause a stir.

Leicester have recently signed Ron-Robert Zieler as competition to the Dane, but a sizeable offer from Everton may even persuade the Foxes to cut ties with the blonde star.
