Leicester City homing in on landing the new N’Golo Kante
Leicester City are continuing their preparations to defend their Premier League title, with reports stating the Foxes have agreed personal terms with Nice midfielder Nampalys Mendy.
The east midlands club have been linked with the 23-year-old for over a year, and tabled a bid for Mendy last summer before signing N’Golo Kante.
With Kante proving a sensation in the Premier League last season however, the Foxes are under pressure to keep their star asset, and some are viewing Mendy’s potential arrival as a safety-net should the 25-year-old be wooed elsewhere.
Mendy’s contract with Nice runs out in 12 months’ time, but French news outlet RMC Sport have claimed personal terms have been reached, and the only stumbling block is the transfer fee.
It’s believed Leicester are offering around £8m, while the Ligue 1 side are holding out for nearer £12m.
The midfielder’s performances last season will certainly have done no harm to his value, with Mendy an ever-present in a Nice side which finished fourth last term, just two points shy of a Champions League spot.
What’s more, the south-coast club boasted the fourth-best defence last season, a defence shielded by a man many are comparing to Premier League star Kante.
Mendy impressed current Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri when he played under the Italian at Monaco, and it’s believed the player is keen to activate a move.
With the future of Kante, Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez uncertain, Ranieri and Leicester appear keen to bring in new players earlier rather than later, with a Champions League campaign to look forward to in addition to defending their Premier League title.
Sign the talented Mendy however, and the Foxes will be much more prepared for whatever else may come this summer.
