Lyon star attracting a trio of Premier League suitors

Lyon’s talented winger Rachid Ghezzal is set to be at the centre of a tug-of-war involving some of the Premier League and Europe’s biggest clubs this summer.

The 24-year-old Algerian starred for Les Gones last term, in what became his breakout campaign.

Ghezzal racked up eight goals and eight assists in 29 Ligue 1 appearances last term, in addition to a quartet of Champions League games.

Having been with Lyon throughout the club’s youth systems, Ghezzal spent three seasons in and out of the team before last year’s breakthrough.

His performances quickly drew the admiration of many of Europe’s top clubs however, and with one year left on his contract in Lyon, he has become the centre of much speculation.

Liverpool, Sunderland and newly-promoted Middlesbrough are the three Premier League sides known to be interested in acquiring the winger, but they all face competition from the continent.

Spanish trio Valencia, Villarreal and Celta Vigo are also believed to be keen on Ghezzal, and of the six clubs, only Villarreal can offer Champions League football next term.

Lyon have spoken of the situation, with club President Jean-Michel Aulas stating: “He has one year on his contract. Either he re-signs or we sell. We’ll see.”

“He was made a valid proposal. It was an interesting proposition for him. We will do everything we can to keep him.”

That one remaining year on Ghezzal’s current contract has him valued by transfermarkt.co.uk at under £2m, but with so many clubs in contention for his services, a price war looks likely.

The big question is, who’ll win the battle to secure his signature?
