Poll Reaction: Rory McIlroy heading for second triumph at The Open

| 14.07.2016

Nobody can stop Rory McIlroy from winning The Open for the second time in three years, at Troon.

That’s the verdict of today’s poll, where we tasked Twitter with telling us who would be crowned this year’s Open champion.

The Northern Irishman hasn’t won a major since 2014 but having won this event and the PGA Championship two years ago, he’s retained the support of voters, with 38 per cent of you backing him to triumph in Troon.

American Dustin Johnson, who claimed his first major at the U.S. Open in Oakmont last month came a distant second with 22 per cent of the vote, though there are clearly a significant minority of fans tipping the South Carolina native to have a truly incredible 2016.

In third spot was ‘Other’, which finished the poll just one per cent below Johnson. A number of potential winners were suggested, from last year’s shock Open winner Zach Johnson, to the experienced Henrik Stenson and 150/1 outsider Russell Knox.

And the final spot in our poll is occupied by Bubba Watson, though he’s only just missed the cut for our illustrious top-three, with the affable American picking up 19 per cent of your votes after a topsy-turvy day.

However, with the conditions set to get wet, windy and slightly wild at Troon this weekend, nobody’s out of it yet – so any of the men mentioned above could still get their hands on the Claret Jug.

Rory McIlroy is currently second favourite at 10/1, alongside Dustin Johnson, with Phil Mickelson (8/1) the favourite. The Northern Irishman has already taken home the coveted Twitter poll title. But can he make it a perfect double by adding a fifth major to his CV?
