Spurs in talks with German ace over blockbuster transfer

| 10.07.2016

Mario Gotze’s future looks increasingly likely to be away from Bayern Munich, with Tottenham emerging as a frontrunner to offer him a new home.

The German international was rarely used by Pep Guardiola last season and although the Spaniard has now departed Bavaria, talk about the forward following suit hasn’t stopped.

German newspaper Bild report that Spurs have twice held talks with Gotze’s representatives over the summer, which puts the north Londoners ahead of rival suitors Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund.

The latter two clubs would seem to have a more direct link to Gotze than Spurs, with Dortmund the 24-year-old’s former side and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp the Memmingen native’s ex manager.

However, the player’s agent and father, Jurgen, has reportedly met with the Lilywhites before both of those sides, apparently putting Spurs in the driving seat for his signature.

Football website Transfermarkt.co.uk value Gotze at around £30m. He is under contract with Bayern until next summer, so is likely to cost Spurs a pretty penny to lure him away from the Allianz Arena.

The 56-cap international was limited to just 956 minutes of Bundesliga action last season, scoring three goals and adding four assists.

After featuring in all three of his country’s group games at Euro 2016, Gotze played just 23 minutes in the knockout phase, coming on as a substitute as Germany lost to France in the semi-final.

Having been starved of a starting role since his Dortmund days, the World Cup winner would likely expect his next move to satisfy that need. He’d face competition from Christian Eriksen to play in his preferred number 10 role though.
