Odds of Manchester United swooping for Jose Fonte continue to fall

| 23.08.2016

New Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has already spent over £150m since taking over, but his revolution is set to continue with the acquisition of Southampton and Portugal defender Jose Fonte.

The Euro 2016 winner is just 7/4 to team up with his compatriot at Old Trafford, the shortest price we’ve seen to date. And with deadline day just over a week away, Mourinho will be hoping a move for Fonte doesn’t stretch on anywhere near the length of the Paul Pogba saga.

But should a move to the Red Devils fail to materialise, Fonte has been heavily linked with a whole host of other top-flight teams – most notably Everton – and he’s just 6/5 to leave St Mary’s for another Premier League Club before the window slams shut.

The 31-year-old would be available for around £8m, representing real value in today’s market for a player with so much experience.

The centre-back has been at the south coast club since 2009, representing them in the league on no less than 244 occasions in three different divisions, and in that time he’s scored an impressive 15 goals – not a bad return for a defender.

And for those of you fancying the 6 ft 2 in defender to make a summer switch from the Saints to the Red Devils, perhaps a bet worth casting your eye over is the 8/1 for Fonte to win the Premier League this season.

United are currently 13/5 to lift the trophy, but should the Fonte deal go through as expected, you could essentially get 8/1 for Mourinho to win the league in his first season in charge.

A Ladbrokes spokesperson said: “Odds of Fonte leaving Southampton are continuing to drop and it might not be long before we see him in a United shirt.”
