League Two boss emerging as a shock Aston Villa candidate

| 05.10.2016

Since Roberto Di Matteo was sacked as Aston Villa manager, the race to succeed him has started as frenetically as any Formula 1 battle.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner looked to have hit the front first when early rumours were doing the rounds.

Steve Bruce’s name wasn’t far behind the German’s in those gossip columns and the former Hull man remains our market leader at 10/11 to take over at Villa Park.

After being overlooked for the Swansea City gig, Ryan Giggs’ odds for the Midlands vacancy tumbled yesterday and now a brand new name has been tossed into the mix, not from left-field, but from League Two.

Nathan Jones is currently in his first managerial job, having taken over at Luton Town in January following a long apprenticeship as assistant coach of both Brighton and Yeovil, yet he’s 12/1 to become Villa’s next boss.

His candidacy for the Villans has emerged, according to the Daily Mirror, because of owner Dr Tony Xia’s concerns over Bruce’s ties with Birmingham, where he took charge between 2001 and 2007.

Having masterminded a 3-1 EFL Cup win over Di Matteo’s strugglers early this season, Jones has clearly remained on Dr Xia’s radar.

The Welshman took the Hatters from 15th place when he took over, to 11th by the end of last season and has the Bedfordshire side sat in fourth this term with five wins from the first 11 games.

Only second place Doncaster – who Jones’ men have beaten already – have scored more goals than Luton and that kind of attacking verve will attract a Villa board whose side are the third-lowest scorers in the Championship.

Villa’s next game comes at home to Wolves after the international break and we go 10/11 that they secure all three points.
