Traders price up January swap deal for Liverpool & Sunderland stars

Jordan Pickford

Look away now, Sunderland fans, because your season could be about to take a horrible turn, despite finally finding some form in the Premier League.

Yep, such has been the brilliant start to life in between the sticks for the Black Cats, Jordan Pickford has since been the subject of a move away from the Stadium of Light.

And right now, it’s Liverpool who lead the way in the race for the 22-year-old’s signature, and a familiar face may just be heading the other way.

Simon Mignolet has struggled to hold down a regular first-team place at Anfield, following the arrival of Loris Karius in the summer, and it’s thought that Jurgen Klopp is using the Belgium international as a potential bargaining tool in his quest to bring Pickford to Merseyside.

Our traders make it a 12/1 shot for Mignolet and Pickford to swap clubs in January. And while news of their prized asset heading for a mid-season exit may hurt Sunderland fans, they won’t be too disheartened with his potential replacement.

Mignolet spent three years in the North East between 2010-13, playing a huge part in maintaining Sunderland’s Premier League status back in the 2012-13 campaign before then-Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers expressed an interest.

And while he’s since represented the Reds on 113 occasions in the league, it’s thought the club are looking for a new name in goal to push for the title.

Pickford might just be that man, having represented England at, U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 level.

He won’t come cheap, though, for any potential suitor.

But given that Liverpool can offer an immediate replacement for David Moyes’ side, and the Reds’ history of dealing with Sunderland in the past, there’s every chance of Klopp adding Pickford to his ranks, with a January deal not beyond the realms of imagination.

What do fans think? Would Sunderland supporters welcome Mignolet back? And is Pickford a safe enough pair of hands to take Liverpool to the next level?
