BDO World Darts Championship: Will Scotty prove too hot for rivals?

Published:

When Michael van Gerwen hit bullseye last night to claim the 2017 PDC World Darts Championship, our attention immediately turned to one thing: the BDO version.

As is the case every year, when proceedings draw to a close at the Ally Pally, the BDO’s Lakeside venue begins preparing itself for a flood of tungsten loving fanatics to enter through its doors.

But who are the frontrunners to lift this year’s trophy?

Ladbrokes News runs you through three names worth considering in Frimley Green, and we begin with the reigning champ…

Scott Waites – 12/1

It’s not often you see a player that’s defending his own crown priced so long before an arrow has been thrown.

But that’s the case with Scott Waites, and it’s a credit to the standard of darts we’re seeing in the BDO right now.

Bear in mind that this is a man who has twice recorded the biggest margin of victory ever seen in a Best of 13 Set final at Lakeside.

His route to the final includes potential meetings with Danny NoppertScott Mitchell and Glen Durrant, and it’s fair to say the world number eight has it all to do.

But on his day, Scotty 2 Hotty can beat anyone on this circuit.

Glen Durrant – 15/8

It’s no surprise to see the world number one priced so short in the outright market, given his form over the last few years.

But this is the biggest stage of all, and it’s one which Duzza has never reached the final on.

And entering the tournament as the first seed means he won’t face an opponent in the top five until the semi-finals, meaning the 46-year-old should be finding his form at exactly the right time.

He picked up 12 trophies in 2016 across the world, but a Lakeside triumph this time out would trump every single one of them.

Martin Adams – 20/1

Write Wolfie off at your peril.

No player currently on the BDO circuit has more World Championship titles to their name than Adams. And despite taking his foot off the gas in recent years, he’s still a contender for the trophy.

How many times in this tournament have we seen crucial games come down to who has more bottle?

If we find ourselves in that position this time out, then Admas – appearing at his 24th World Championship event – will already have one hand on the trophy.
