Watford keen to land exiled AC Milan star Honda this January

| 05.01.2017

With a mounting injury list and a poor run of form, Watford could use some January reinforcements. And according to the press, AC Milan’s Keisuke Honda could be headed for Hertfordshire.

The Japan international has barely featured for I Rossonerri this season, making a mere five Serie A appearances, totalling just 95 minutes of league football this term.

Coupled with those infrequent outings is the fact that Honda’s contract with the San Siro outfit is up in the summer.

And neither club nor player appear eager to extend the partnership.

But Watford boss Walter Mazzarri is reportedly keen on bringing the 30-year-old in, and a January move has been touted, although Southampton are another side linked with the Japanese star.

It wasn’t too long ago that Honda was tipped as one of the brightest talents in the game, with a series of fine performances for VVV-Venlo and CSKA Moscow.

And when he arrived at AC in January 2014, it appeared Honda had finally found a club worthy of his talent.

With six goals and five assists in his first full season in Italy, things looked pretty sweet.

But with AC running through five managers in a little over two years, stability has been hard to come by for Honda and his Milan career looks very much over.

He still has plenty to offer, and is one of only a few players to have scored in two World Cup Finals.

Watford have slipped down the table of late, thanks to a run of one win in eight, and they sit just seven points above the drop zone.

That sequence has seen Mazzarri become the favourite in the running for the next Premier League manager to be sacked at 8/11.

But if they land Honda, they’ll have plenty more reason to be confident about saving their season.

In the meantime, the Hornets will be hoping for an easier time of it this weekend when they host Burton in the Emirates FA Cup.

The bookies make the Premier League outfit 4/7 favourites. But should the Championship outfit claim a surprise at 19/4, it will only heighten Watford’s need for a player of Honda’s quality.
