Why our latest Arsenal special is certainly worth considering

They’ve gone a staggering 12 seasons without winning the Premier League, and that run looks set to extend further this year. But despite all that, there’s plenty to suggest that the 5/1 on Arsenal to win the league again under Arsene Wenger is in fact cracking value.

And here’s why…

Building a team of contenders

Slowly but surely, the Gunners are adding players to their ranks with experience of challenging for and winning league titles. Be that in the Premier League in the case of Danny Welbeck and Petr Cech, or by adding former La Liga champions Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

And while it’s a long and sometimes frustrating approach that Wenger has taken to big money transfers, it’s one which certainly has the potential to pay off.

Instead of adding five or six huge names to his ranks in one transfer window, the French boss has taken a much more gradual approach, signing one huge name every summer since Ozil’s arrival in 2013.

That, combined with the quality players currently at Wenger’s disposal, means the future is very bright indeed for the north London outfit.

It’s a bet which could run and run

Granted, a lot of the previous point may depend on the futures of Ozil and Sanchez, with the former admitting that he’ll only stay on if Wenger remains in charge. But if the latest reports are anything to go by, then that could be for a few more years yet.

Though we’re yet to hear anything concrete from the big man himself in regard to his future, one thing’s for certain – the board aren’t in a hurry to send him packing.

In fact, what’s more likely to be the case is that he’ll continue to stay on until he’s achieved something huge – like winning the league again.

So often has it been the case over the last few years that supporters and pundits alike have speculated over the 67-year-old’s future. Yet year after year, he steps out of the Emirates tunnel as boss.

Just as his old enemy Sir Alex Ferguson did at Manchester United, Wenger will want to bow out as the reigning Premier League-winning manager.

They’re getting closer

In the 2013-14 campaign, Arsenal finished fourth. The following year they grabbed third spot. Last time out they were runners-up. And people say the club aren’t progressing?

While it’s unlikely they’ll topple league leaders Chelsea this season, there’s every reason to suggest Ozil and co can finish in second place once again. And there’d be no shame in that, given the improvement we’ve seen from the big clubs this year.

You’d still feel the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham, Man City and Man United are a couple of years away from being the finished article. That especially being the case with the latter two sides, whose managers are still trying to stamp their philosophies down at their new clubs.

That means there’s arguably never been a better time for the Gunners to mount a serious title challenge in the next season or two.

And we wouldn’t back against Wenger being there to mastermind it.
