Scottish winner features in our Grand National 3 to follow

| 06.04.2017

It’s time to put your sweepstake kits to one side, shut the paper and ignore everything Uncle Ray told you about red being the luckiest colour in the Grand National.

Instead, focus on our three to follow and you shouldn’t go too far wrong.

Well, that’s what we’re hoping anyway.

The truth is it’s pretty damn hard picking the winner of the world’s greatest steeplechase.

But like a scorned lover who just can’t let go we still come back for more every year.

And in this particular article we’re not going to bombard you with crackpot theories, hearsay and opinion. There’s plenty of that elsewhere on Ladbrokes News.

Nope, you’ll only find useful information and valuable pointers below…

Vicente

This has been the target for last year’s Scottish National winner since scoring at Ayr and with marathon experience in the bank we’re expecting another big run here.

Three-time winning owner Trevor Hemmings bought this Paul Nicholls-trained charge following the sad death of 2015 Grand National winner Many Clouds in January.

And he could well be rewarded when this nicely weighted ‘spring horse’ lines-up at Aintree.

Saint Are

Davy Russell is a great jockey booking by trainer Tom George but the Irish maverick isn’t the only positive in Saint Are’s favour.

He may be in the autumn of his career but this 2015 runner-up can go well again on Merseyside with his second at Doncaster last time out a respectable piece of form.

Good ground is another huge plus and the noises coming from his handler’s camp suggest it’ll be no surprise to see this 11-year-old hit the frame.

Pleasant Company

Seven of the last 10 Grand National winners finished in the top four on their last completed start, and like Saint Are, Willie Mullins’ Pleasant Company ticks that box.

He’s three from six over fences and a winner in two of his previous three outings so comes into the Grand National with plenty of momentum.

One of those victories came in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse, a race where he had a few re-opposing rivals in behind.

Superstar jockey Ruby Walsh will be onboard for Mullins in a bid to win the race for a third time.
