Is this Fiorentina ace the man to succeed Dier at Tottenham?

Published:

They may have secured their best-ever Premier League finish last season, but Tottenham Hotspur could lose a host of their key men this summer.

But in the case of Eric Dier, Spurs may have already found the Englishman’s replacement.

While Dier is heavily linked with Manchester United, Fiorentina’s Matias Vecino has emerged as his successor in North London.

According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, the 25-year-old is very much on Tottenham’s radar.

The Uruguayan shone for La Violas last term, making 40 appearances in the middle of the park.

Vecino has been in Florence for four years, moving from his native Nacional for £2m in 2013.

They’ve been keen to ease him into the Italian scene however, and the Canelones-native spent time on loan at Cagliari and Empoli before becoming a Fiorentina regular.

But since the 2015-16 season, he’s been a focal point of the side, making all of his 78 appearances in the last two campaigns.

And we reckon he would get stuck in to life in the Premier League, as 18 bookings in those campaigns attests.

Vecino has gone on to appear 13 times for Uruguay, and a move to Tottenham – playing in the Premier League and Champions League – would only enhance his chances of a starting role for his country at next year’s World Cup.

Valued at £11m by transfermarkt.co.uk and with a contract running until 2021, Fiorentina could pocket anything up to £35m this summer.

But that could still result in a new-profit for Spurs too, should Dier end up going to Old Trafford.
