While the Ladbrokes News team were glued to the International Football on Saturday night, one savvy punter was using the World Cup 2018 qualifiers as a springboard for an incredible 16-fold accumulator which turned £5 into a cool £21,052.

But this brilliant bet certainly let our customer biting their fingernails, with a number of games settled in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.

It began with four early-evening WCQ games. Denmark and Slovenia did their bit comfortably, but a Northern Ireland victory and a draw in England v Scotland looked to have let this bet down heading into the 92nd minute of each contest.

Norn Iron were level, and the Scots had turned around a deficit to lead late on at Hampden Park.

However, Stuart Dallas’ injury-time strike for Michael O’Neill’s men in Baku and a Harry Kane cracker right at the death to bring the Three Lions level kept this bet alive going into the next round of fixtures.

That included a flurry of Spanish selections, with the likes of Alcorcon and Real Oviedo breezing to comfortable wins, though Real Valladolid left it until the 88th-minute to secure three points in their game – and keep this plucky punter’s dream alive.

Onto the next batch of internationals!

And this bunch were pretty comfortable. Germany, Slovakia, Montenegro and Poland all did their bit with relative ease, while the Draw on Norway v Czech Republic proved a safe selection.

That meant all that was needed for this £21k+ haul was victory for Brazilian pair Palmeiras and Internacional.

The former raced into an early lead, before being pegged back at 1-1. But the men in green rallied to take this bet down to the final game…

So, would Internacional pull through, or would things end in heartbreaking fashion?

Well, they were involved in quite a goal-fest. The hosts led against Nautico, were pegged back, and went 3-1 up before conceding on 85 minutes to shred our customer’s nerves.

However, a last-gasp goal from Marcelo Cirino wrapped up the points and secured a huge windfall for our punter.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Predicting the results of 16 games during the close season makes this one of the most remarkable bets we’ve paid out all year.”

“Our punter’s heart must have very much been in their mouth when Leigh Griffiths gave Scotland the lead in the 90th minute. But Captain Kane was there to save the day for England and this customer, who still must be pinching themselves!”

And speaking of Ladbrokes, we’re £21k out of pocket!
