Carabao Cup: Who’ll cause a second round upset?

| 21.08.2017

The second round of the Carabao Cup takes place this week and this is when most of the Premier League sides join the party.

And that improves the chances that we’ll see an upset take place.

The second round games take place on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Here are our picks for potential upsets:

Birmingham v Bournemouth

Bournemouth were knocked out of both domestic cups by lower-league opposition last season and this could be an ideal time for Birmingham City to face them.

The Cherries have lost both of their league games this season. They’ll need to get some points on the board soon.

And with Manchester City coming to town on Saturday, Eddie Howe may choose to rest players for this one.

Bournemouth have only beaten Sunderland on the road so far in 2017 and this has got the makings of a cup scalp for Birmingham at 9/4.

Cheltenham v West Ham

Cheltenham Town may be 20th in League Two but there aren’t many reasons to fear West Ham United on current form.

The Hammers have looked short of ideas and direction in the Premier League this season.

They’re bottom of the table with no goals or points.

Our traders have the Robins at 6/1 to overcome the three-division gap and knock out the East London outfit.

If Cheltenham are well-organised, committed and a little lucky, they’ve got every chance.

Newcastle v Nottingham Forest

Newcastle United are without a point or a goal in the Premier League after two games of the season.

Even at this early stage, all of the post-promotion optimism seems to have disappeared.

By contrast, Nottingham Forest will approach their trip to St. James’ Park with real confidence.

Forest are fourth in the Championship with three wins from four so far and we’ve got them at 5/1 to dump their top-flight opposition out of the cup.
