Mayweather v McGregor: Fight preview and Tale of the Tape

| 25.08.2017

We’re just hours away from what could be one of the great mismatches in boxing history as Floyd Mayweather takes on Conor McGregor in Las Vegas in the small hours of Sunday morning.

The American goes for 50 wins undefeated against one of MMA’s pound-for-pound best.

It’s a bit of a freak show, in truth, but, just like you, we’re hugely excited about watching it anyway.

Ahead of the fight, we’ll look to analyse the possible outcomes and pick the best bets.

Floyd Mayweather

Tale of the Tape: 49-0 (26 KO) … Streak: W49 … Last 5: 5-0 … Last 10: 10-0 … Stance: Orthodox … Height/Reach: 5’8 / 72″ … Age: 40

This really should be a walk in the park for Mayweather. If Conor McGregor wasn’t a walking, talking money-making machine, this fight simply wouldn’t be happening.

The notion that a fighter – albeit a highly-talented one in his own sport – could beat someone of Mayweather’s calibre in his own discipline is outrageous.

And yet here we are, just a couple of days out from the event, and you can still back ‘Money’ to win by KO, TKO, or Disqualification at 8/11.

In fact, even the current odds of 1/4 on a straight win look to be good value.

Many are giving McGregor a puncher’s chance, and in any fight, there is always that possibility.

But then the best boxers of their generation have been unable to land on him, so how does the Irishman expect to?

This should be an easy victory for Mayweather, and we’re looking at the latter rounds for a stoppage. It’s 2/1 he wins in Round 7-12.

Conor McGregor

 Tale of the Tape: Record: 0-0 (0 KO) … Streak: N/A … Last 5: 0-0 … Last 10: 0-0 … Stance: Southpaw … Height/Reach: 5’9″ / 74″ … Age: 29

Just looking at the comparison in our Tale of the Tape between the two fighters tells you all you need to know when it comes to this boxing bout.

And boxing is the operative word here. This is Conor McGregor’s professional debut. He is an unknown quantity, and that will be his weapon.

Apart from his powerful left hand, the fact that his opponent will have a severe shortage of footage to study should be an advantage. It’s difficult to prepare for something you know little about.

The double UFC champion has not enlisted any boxing trainers to help him in his preparations, either. That means the Dubliner will more than likely be as unorthodox a boxer as they come.

Mayweather could possibly find it difficult to work out the angles initially, which will give the ‘Notorious’ his best chance in the early rounds.

He’s 3/1 to win, and 10/3 to win by KO, TKO or Disqualification. Surely one big straight left is his only hope?

If he doesn’t stop him within the first three rounds, it’s as good as over. Some would say it was before it even began.
