ITV Racing Tips: Ask The Weatherman forecast for Welsh National win

| 05.01.2018

The Tolworth Hurdle and the rescheduled Welsh Grand National are the highlight of a bumper nine-race card on ITV this Saturday.

A total of 20 runners will go to post for the Chepstow showpiece, while Western Ryder and Kalashnikov are favourites for the Tolworth.

We’ve got an alternative selection for that one – plus eight other fancies – in our ITV Racing Tips…

NAP – Ask The Weatherman – 14:05 Chepstow

In a wide-open contest, we think that Ask The Weatherman can gallop to victory in the mud.

Jack R Barber’s raider is a hugely successful point-to-pointer and is two from three in his chasing career.

For a horse who loves heavy ground and is experienced over 3m+, he certainly has the stamina to last the trip.

He stayed on well to win a tough handicap event at Exeter in November and has an advantage in the weights compared to a number of those at the head of the betting.

The eight-year-old conforms to a number of the major form trends and provides excellent value, even on each-way terms.

NB – Mont Des Avaloirs – 14:25 – Sandown

Forget Western Ryder and Kalashnikov, it’s Mont Des Avaloirs who offers the real value for speculative punters in the Tolworth.

Paul Nicholls’ five-year-old showed a liking for the heavy ground in victory at Aintree last time out.

And at a similar distance and in similar conditions at Sandown, he has the capacity to run well again.

If the son of Blue Bresil can take an early lead, he could upset the favourites and outrun his odds in a big way.

Lively Longshot – Fox Appeal – 15:00 – Sandown

The old-timers take centre-stage in the final race of the 2017 Veterans’ Chase Series.

Given that the front five in the market have all failed to record back-to-back victories in the last year, we think it could be worth looking a little further down the field.

That’s why Irish-bred raider Fox Appeal gets the nod at a tasty price.

Emma Lavelle’s 11-year-old is a consistent challenger at this level and can break his six-race duck in a big field. Champion Jockey Richard Johnson on board only improves his claims.
