Fantastic Fulham creeping up on Cardiff in race for Prem promotion

| 09.04.2018

24 hours is a long time in football.

On Friday night Cardiff City missed the chance to go within three points of Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers.

By Saturday evening, the Bluebirds had seen their lead over third-place Fulham reduced to just two points after the Cottagers saw off Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at Hillsborough.

The momentum is now with the West Londoners to make a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2014.

Slavisa Jokanovic’s men are 4/7 to win promotion against 3/10 for Cardiff, who have a game in hand on their opponents.

Yet it’s the Welsh side that have the more difficult run-in.

City must travel to Aston Villa, Derby County and Norwich City before the end of the season.

They’ve recently drawn against Sheffield United and lost out to Wolves in a dramatic finish at the Cardiff City Stadium on Friday night.

The Bluebirds missed two late penalties to gain a share of the spoils against the runaway league-leaders.

They couldn’t hold it together against Nuno Espirito Santo’s men. Neither could manager Neil Warnock.

But can the club now regroup and maintain their place in the automatic promotion places?

If they can’t, Fulham will be primed to pounce.

The Whites take on three of the bottom-six in their last five matches. Fixtures against Reading, Sunderland and Birmingham City will not fill the buoyant Craven Cottage outfit with any fear.

Especially off the back of a 15-match unbeaten run.

That form has been helped by the incredible goalscoring exploits of on-loan Newcastle United forward Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The Serbian striker has bagged nine goals in his last nine matches.

Prior to that, the 23-year-old had struck nine times in his last 37 matches for Newcastle dating back to May 2016.

His renaissance under fellow countryman Jokanovic has been magnificent.

And in tandem with the good form of Tom Cairney and Ryan Fredericks amongst others, it has put the Cottagers in with a real chance of automatic promotion.

Fulham may not be in pole position just yet.

But if 24 hours is a long time in football, then a whole week could shift the dimensions of the race for the Premier League entirely.
