Last season was below the high standards set by Tommy Wright’s St Johnstone in recent times. The Perth club missed out on a top-six finish for the first time in seven seasons – finishing eighth.

But talismanic captain Joe Shaughnessy is confident that Saints will finish the 2018-19 season in the upper echelons of the Ladbrokes Premiership.

He told us: “We’re looking good after a decent League Cup campaign and we have to be looking to get back into the top six after missing out last season for the first time in six seasons or so.”

The Perth club topped their cup group in comfortable fashion – and the 26-year-old has identified how to keep that good form going.

Shaughnessy explained: “Over the summer we analysed what went wrong last season and the bottom line was we lost bad goals.”

“We were losing goals that St Johnstone just don’t normally lose so we need to cut them out.”

“That has been the message and we have been working hard to make sure that we are stronger at the back than we were last season. I think we have built up momentum and we feel ready to achieve that aim.”

The Irishman is currently sidelined due to injury, so will be watching on as the Saints head to Kilmarnock on Saturday. It’s 14/5 for a St Johnstone victory, while the visitors are 7/10 in the Double Chance.
