BMW Championship tips: Johnson and Rose head betting

Published:

With the Ryder Cup squads now known, attention turns to the BMW Championships in Pennsylvania’s Aronimink Golf Club.

It’s the penultimate event of the PGA season, and it could give early clues about which stars from Team USA and Team Europe are in form.

The favourites

As is so often the case, Dustin Johnson tops the betting at 8/1. DJ has won three events this season, with a further trio of second or third places.

But it’s his season stats which explain his favouritism. Johnson is first on the PGA Tour this year for scoring average and birdie average, while he’s second when it comes to eagles and sixth for driving distance.

Justin Rose is DJ’s closest challenger at 12s. The Englishman is very much a man in form. Of his last seven PGA events, he’s posted one win and four other top-10 finishes.

Rose also won this event in 2010, and was runner-up 12 months ago.

But neither Johnson nor Rose have quite enjoyed the year like Brooks Koepka has.

The American won the US Open in June and the PGA Championship last month. He’s 14/1 to continue his stunning summer with another victory.

The ones to watch

Justin Thomas fits in here at 14s. The 25-year-old has posted a win, a third and sixth in his last four events.

But even Thomas can’t quite match Bryson DeChambeau for form right now. The flat cap-wearing American heads to Pennsylvania having won the last two PGA Tournaments.

The 24-year-old’s stunning run has seen him land a Wildcard spot in the Ryder Cup. He’s 16/1 to make it a hat-trick this Sunday.

Further down the betting, and Tony Finau is a man on the move. The 25/1 shot has hit a hot streak lately, with a second in August’s Northern Trust, followed by a fourth in last week’s Dell Technologies Championship.

Finau sits alongside Tiger Woods at 25/1. The American is sure to be a popular pick this weekend, given his return to contention this season.

Tiger has been a touch off the pace in his last two events, following that superb second in the PGA Championships. But he could be on the hunt this weekend having been announced as a wildcard for the USA’s Ryder Cup team.
