Why Everton’s misfiring attack could cost them this term

| 27.09.2018

After a bright start to the season, Everton have now failed to win any of their last four league outings.

Marco Silva’s side will feel they should have got something from the two most recent losses to West Ham United and Arsenal.

They created enough chances to get a result in both games, but poor finishing cost them badly.

The Toffees were arguably the better side at the Emirates on Sunday until Arsenal took the lead in the second-half. The intensity of their approach unsettled the hosts and they kept getting in behind.

Petr Cech produced his best display for a long time in goal for the Gunners. But for a club with ambitions of breaking into the top six, Everton have to do better with their chances.

Lack a star striker

Silva left Cenk Tosun out of the starting XI against Arsenal. The Turkish international’s last goal in an Everton shirt was all the way back in April.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was given the nod up front. The 21-year-old has plenty of potential and works hard, but he hasn’t developed the cutting edge needed at the top level yet.

Oumar Niasse is another alternative in attack. He always puts a shift in, but he’s not a reliable goalscorer.

The benefit of having real quality up front was clear to see in North London. Arsenal struggled to get going for most of the first hour, until Alexandre Lacazette hit a stunning shot into the top corner to turn the game.

Everton won’t have the luxury of being able to win while playing poorly until they’re more clinical in front of goal.

Spread the goals around

Without an elite striker, Everton need the rest of the team to chip in with more goals.

Richarlison and Theo Walcott both made impressive starts to the campaign. But neither of them have hit the back of the net in the club’s last four games. Gylfi Sigurdsson has only scored five league goals since his big-money move last summer too.

Everton spent almost £100m in the summer. They may have to get the chequebook out again soon to bring in another goalscorer.
