Liverpool v Everton tips: Can Silva stifle Klopp again?

Published:

The 232nd Merseyside derby takes place today, with Liverpool hoping to continue their recent dominance over Stanley Park neighbours Everton.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds sit second in the Premier League, and remain unbeaten, but had a hard-fought defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in midweek was a blow.

Marco Silva’s Everton, meanwhile, have had all week to rest and prepare for this clash.

Silva has previous versus Klopp too. He guided Hull City to a 2-0 win over Liverpool in 2017, before leading Watford to a 3-3 draw against the Reds at the start of last season. Can he do so again? Here’s your preview of the big game…

Match odds

Liverpool, who are unbeaten in their last 20 meetings versus Everton, are 4/11 favourites. The Toffees, winless at Anfield since 1999, are 15/2.

Both of last season’s meetings, and five of the last eight league clashes in total, have ended all-square and 19/5 says it’s honours-even once again.

Talking tactics

Everton’s biggest task will be containing the movement of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

The duohave combined for 13 Premier League goals already this season, so it could be a long afternoon for full-backs Seamus Coleman and Lucas Digne. Idrissa Gueye will be tasked with shutting down Liverpool’s threaded passes too.

Going the other way, Gylfi Sigurdsson will be out to unpick a Liverpool defence which has conceded only five goals this season.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have formed a formidable partnership, but they’ll need their wits about them to keep tabs on Richarlison. The Toffees’ record-signing has already scored six league goals since joining from Watford.

Goalscorer odds

As mentioned, Salah and Mane are firing in the goals this season. The Egyptian opened the scoring in this game last season and is 3/1 to do so again. There’s 10/11 about Salah anytime.

Mane was the one to score first in both meetings of the 2016-17 season, however. He’s 9/2 to fire in first this afternoon and 6/4 anytime.

According to the odds, Everton’s best goal threat lies with Richarlison. The Brazilian is 10/1 to score first and 3/1 anytime.

Sigurdsson netted in last season’s FA Cup game at Anfield, and the Icelander is 7/2 to net at any stage.
