Austin’s Powers: Charlie Austin primed for move away from Saints

| 29.01.2019

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has started to shuffle his pack this month. He’s already packed Manolo Gabbiadini off to Sampdoria and now it looks like another striker will be on his way out.

Charlie Austin is desperately seeking first-team football in the second half of the season and there will be many suitors for the prolific front-man.

He’s bagged loadsa goals during his career and his prolific form in the Championship means danger could well actually be his middle name!

We take a look at three clubs who could do with the bags-man up front…

Wolverhampton Wanderers

All the talk was about a move for Tammy Abraham at Molineux earlier this month.

The Chelsea striker has been hitting the onion bag with alarming consistency on-loan at Aston Villa this season which hadn’t gone unnoticed. But the youngster killed any interest by staying put.

Wolves have a wealth of forward-thinking players but only one out and out big-man in Raul Jimenez.

The Mexican does have six goals to his name but his deputy Leo Bonatini is failing to cut the mustard in the Prem.

A top-eight finish with a sniff of Europe is in the air and Austin at 6/1 could be the man to shoot them there.

Leicester City

The Southampton man has been blighted by injury during his time on the South Coast – but when fit he struck 18 goals in 35 appearances for Queens Park Rangers in the 2014-15 top-flight season.

He’s also at 6/1 here as the Foxes have moved away from their direct, pacey style to a more possession-based game.

This has meant Jamie Vardy isn’t always the perfect fit. Kelechi Iheanacho has showed glimpses of his promise, but Leicester need a sure thing.

Claude Puel does have a good bargaining chip in Islam Slimani. The Algerian forward has been on loan at Fenerbahce but could be tempted by a move back to the Prem.

Saints are looking for a fresh forward-line, so this could work for both parties!

Aston Villa

Austin’s track record at this level is unquestioned. And Villa lead the betting at 7/10 for his services which could be the perfect fit in their bid for a Premier League return.

The Midlands club may still have Abraham banging them in, but they only sit tenth in the league – four points outside the play-offs.

Dean Smith is looking to bring in three players before the deadline after freeing up the wage bill by letting Yannick Bolasie leave.

In his first three full seasons in the second-tier Austin grabbed 16, 25 and 17 goals respectively. Basically, he eats Championship goals in his sleep!

No brainer, right?
