Punters pile in on Cleverly to be next permanent Tory leader

| 16.04.2019

James Cleverly has seen his odds of becoming the next permanent leader of the Conservatives slashed in half by our trading team.

Chalked up as a 66/1 outsider a fortnight ago, money continues to pour in for the Braintree MP, and Cleverly is now rated as a 33/1 shot with the bookies to replace Theresa May at the helm of the Tory party.

Boris Johnson remains the favourite at 4/1, with 6/1 the price on offer for Michael Gove or Dominic Raab to step into May’s shoes as and when she departs. At 16/1 Andrea Leadsom is the first female candidate in the betting.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: “Cleverly has been going about his business which punters have latched on to. Several chunky wagers have been placed on him at larger odds all the way down to his current price of 33/1. It will be interesting to see if the momentum continues in his favour.”
